A wine that invites curiosity and rewards the palate.

About This Wine

Tumbledown Hill marks the very first Pinot Noir release from Abingworth Vineyard. Prized worldwide for its elegance and complexity — and notoriously demanding to grow — this variety requires patience, precision, and meticulous care in both vineyard and winery.

Aromas of Morello cherry and violet unfold into soft spice and fine-grained tannins, with smoked plum and raspberry carrying through to a poised, velvety finish.

The label pays tribute to a 13th-century dispute between local rival rectors, once fought near the gentle slopes of Tumbledown Hill where these vines now grow watched over by our loyal vineyard collies.

Refined and intriguing, this is a wine of depth, detail, and subtlety.

Tasting Notes

Elegant and refined, this Pinot Noir greets the palate with bright Morello cherry and delicate violet. Layers of soft spice and fine-grained tannins lead to a lingering, velvety finish, where smoked plum and ripe raspberry emerge, revealing subtle depth and English finesse.

Site

Tumbledown Hill is a compact 1.8 ha south-facing slope dedicated to Pinot Noir. Its sandy soils provide excellent drainage, promoting purity and finesse. Steady sunlight and airflow encourage slow, even ripening, making the site ideal for a meticulous, terroir-driven approach.

Soil

Sandy Silt Loam: Sand - 49.36%, Silt - 41.47%, Clay - 9.17%

Vinification

Hand-harvested and carefully sorted, the Pinot Noir underwent a 48-hour cold soak before gentle fermentation on the skins to extract fine tannins and delicate aromas. Matured for eight months in French oak, then reunited in stainless steel before bottling, the wine emerges balanced, elegant, and true to its cool-climate West Sussex origins.

Vintage

The 2024 vintage required careful vineyard management, but a warm early-autumn spell allowed the fruit to ripen fully. The resulting wines are fresh, elegant, and expressive, with balanced acidity, delicate red fruit, and the cool-climate finesse that defines Abingworth Pinot Noir.
