Full of intrigue — a vibrant English Chardonnay to discover.

About This Wine

Four Fables is an English Chardonnay — elegant, balanced, and finely textured. Delicate aromas of white blossom and lemon peel lead into a palate of crisp apple, subtle almond, and pure minerality, carried by a clean, lingering finish.

Fermented in a 1700-litre concrete egg and handled with minimal intervention, the wine retains freshness and texture while highlighting its natural elegance. The resourceful fox on the label nods to Abingworth’s rich history and hidden priest holes, symbolising intelligence, guidance, and resilience — a poetic reflection of the vineyard and the craft behind the wine.

Tasting Notes

A delicate nose of white flowers and lemon pith opens the wine, leading into a palate driven by pure minerality. Notes of fresh apple and a hint of bitter almond add depth, while the finish is precise, elegant, and refreshing.

Fruit

100% Chardonnay

Site

Our 4-hectare Chardonnay block crowns the top of Greenhurst Field, basking in full sun on its south-facing slope. Warm, sandy loam soils and open skies encourage even ripening, while a mix of clones takes full advantage of the site’s microclimate. The result is Chardonnay with bright acidity, layered complexity, and refined, balanced fruit.

Soil

Sandy Silt Loam: Sand - 33.8%, Silt - 51.69%, Clay - 14.51%

Vinification

This early release comes from a select portion of our main Chardonnay, meticulously sorted to capture only the finest fruit. Whole-bunch pressed and fermented in a 1700-litre concrete egg, it rested on its lees until spring before finishing in stainless steel with a touch of oak. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, the wine preserves its natural texture, freshness, and vibrant expression.

Vintage

2024 was cooler and wetter, but the Chardonnay blocks flourished. With less vegetative growth than other varieties, the vines concentrated on fruit development, producing larger, well-formed bunches. Sunny, sandy soils supported steady ripening, yielding a wine of elegant minerality and concentrated fruit character.

Food Pairings

Perfect with delicate, fresh flavours — from grilled Dover sole with lemon and herbs to roast chicken with tarragon and crème fraîche. A vegan match is asparagus risotto with a touch of lemon zest, where the wine’s crispness and citrus notes lift the dish.
