Does Wine Taste Better at a Vineyard?

We've often found ourselves asking this question, particularly after hosting a tour and tasting.

Visitors return to the winery after walking through the vineyard and taste the wines amongst the very tanks, concrete eggs and oak barrels where they have been crafted over many months. Being close to the origins of the wine seems to give it an extra layer of context and connection. We often see people trying grape varieties they've never seriously considered before, or tasting English wine for the first time, before saying, "Now that's good," or "You wouldn't think this was English wine."

It made us wonder whether wine really does taste better at a vineyard, or whether understanding where it comes from simply changes the way we experience it.

The Story Before Bottling

A wine's journey begins long before the cork or cap is sealed. For many months, the real story is in the vineyard.

Our philosophy has always been to start with exceptional fruit and let it speak for itself. Everything we do in the winery is designed to preserve that character rather than overpower it, allowing the vineyard to shine through in every bottle.

The vines are cared for year-round, with strategic pruning through winter, the uncertainty of spring frost protection, careful canopy management throughout the growing season and the anticipation of harvest as the grapes reach optimum ripeness. Every vintage is shaped by countless small decisions, many of which are unseen by the person enjoying the finished wine.

Maybe that's why people connect with wine so differently at a vineyard. Suddenly, the journey and the care become visible. You begin to understand why a warm September matters, why harvest never happens on the same day each year, or why a vineyard manager spends so much time talking about the weather.

From Vineyard to Winery

There's a common misconception that wine is made in the winery.

It's certainly where fermentation takes place and where the winemaker carefully guides each wine towards its finished style, but the vineyard has already done much of the talking. The fruit arriving at the winery reflects the growing season that came before it, and every decision made amongst the vines is carried through into the finished wine.

Walking through both the vineyard and winery helps connect those two worlds. Rather than seeing them as separate places, you begin to appreciate how closely they work together. One of the advantages of being a small, family-run vineyard is that everything happens here on site, allowing every stage, from grape to glass, to be carefully overseen by the same team.

Seeing Wine Differently

At Abingworth, we begin our tours with a welcome glass before heading out amongst the vines. It's a relaxed way to start the experience, but it also creates an interesting comparison.

By the time we return to the winery for a guided tasting, conversations often become quite different. Guests begin connecting what they've seen in the vineyard with what they're tasting. Questions become more curious, discussions drift towards the growing season, and flavours that perhaps weren't obvious at the start suddenly seem much easier to find.

Perhaps vineyards don't change the wine, but they change us as wine drinkers?

So, Does Wine Taste Better at a Vineyard?

We're not entirely sure there's a right answer.

As a family-run vineyard, those conversations often become just as much about people as they do about wine. We love sharing the stories behind the vines, the history of Champions Farm and the decisions that shape each vintage because, for us, they're all part of the same story.

What we do know is that understanding the landscape, the process and the people behind a bottle has a remarkable way of changing how we experience it. Each layer of understanding seems to reveal another layer of the wine itself. It doesn't change the wine, but it adds context, complexity and a deeper appreciation of what's in the glass. That's something we hope people take home with them long after the tour has finished.
